Today, Agriculture Minister David Marit proclaimed the month of October 2021 as Registered Veterinary Technologist (RVT) Month in Saskatchewan.
"Veterinary technologists are on the front lines of animal health," Marit said. "From assisting veterinarians, performing vital tests, preparing animals for surgery, filling prescriptions and more, animals across the province benefit from the work of veterinary technologists."
Saskatchewan's 530 registered veterinary technologists work in a variety of professional settings, from veterinary offices, livestock operations and government agencies to animal pharmaceutical companies, supply companies and more. Registered veterinary technologists have continued to show their professionalism and dedication to animal welfare as front line workers during the COVID-19 pandemic.
"It is vital to recognize the indispensable role that RVTs play in veterinary medicine before, during, and after the COVID-19 pandemic," Saskatchewan Association of Veterinary Technologists President and Registered Veterinary Technologist Breanne Barber said. " The critical and specialized work that RVTs perform for the health and welfare of animals, as well as their dedication to their fellow veterinary professionals, on a daily basis throughout this province, not only makes RVTs essential but also an imperative foundational element of veterinary medicine."
This month is celebrated both in Canada and the United States. The proclamation of Veterinary Technologist Month in Saskatchewan is supported by the Saskatchewan Association of Veterinary Technologists, which has been representing veterinary technologists in the province since 1984.
