Province Supports Expansion of RCMP Crime Reduction Team To La Ronge And Meadow Lake

Released on November 9, 2021

In the Throne Speech, government announced the expansion of the Crime Reduction Team (CRT) initiative to the La Ronge and Meadow Lake areas. The province will provide $1.5 million for this expansion in 2021-22 and approximately $3.2 million in each subsequent fiscal year.

"The expansion of the Crime Reduction Team is a key addition to Saskatchewan's evolving suite of policing tools," Corrections, Policing and Public Safety Minister Christine Tell said. "The CRTs have been extremely effective in disrupting, dismantling and prosecuting organized crime and we are proud to support the RCMP's expansion of this program."

The CRTs deploy to communities anywhere in the province that are experiencing dramatic surges in criminal activities. The teams conduct targeted enforcement based on intelligence and analysis of crime trends.

This includes high-visibility patrols, tracking dangerous offenders with a history of repeated offences, targeting street-gang activity, and executing arrest warrants. The CRTs also collaborate with community leaders and partner agencies to address the root causes of crime and develop long-term solutions to ensure community safety.

The expansion of the CRT initiative to La Ronge and Meadow Lake brings the total number of CRT units in the province from seven to nine.

The establishment of CRTs in La Ronge and Meadow Lake adds a total of 20 permanent positions, including 16 RCMP officers, two criminal analysts and two administrative assistants.
