PCL Selected As Saskatoon Remand Centre Construction Manager

Released on August 5, 2021

Saskatchewan-based PCL Construction has been chosen to provide construction management services for the Saskatoon Remand Centre expansion project.

PCL Construction is a group of independent construction companies that form Canada's largest general contracting firm.  The company was founded in Stoughton, Saskatchewan in 1906 and has maintained an office in Saskatoon for more than 50 years.  PCL will conduct the majority of their work on the Remand Centre from their Saskatoon office.

"Designing and building a safe correctional facility is uniquely challenging," Corrections, Policing and Public Safety Minister Christine Tell said.  "We know that PCL Construction is the best organization for the job because of their wealth of expertise and strong local roots.  We look forward to working with them on this important project."

When complete, the new Remand Centre will add space for approximately 400 remanded inmates at the Saskatoon Correctional Centre.  This will provide significant additional flexibility to manage Saskatchewan's inmate population and improve corrections' ability to deliver rehabilitative programming.

"PCL is proud to have been selected to provide construction management services for this important infrastructure project," PCL District Manager Mike Staines said.  "We look forward to working with the entire project team and leveraging the skills of the local construction industry in the delivery of this facility."

The Remand Centre expansion project will create approximately 600 construction jobs during the construction phase and result in 130 new permanent positions at the Saskatoon Correctional Centre.

This project is part of the government's $7.5 billion, two-year capital plan to build a strong and safe Saskatchewan.

The project is scheduled for completion by spring 2024.
