$47 Million Investment Announced For New Joint-Use École St. Pius X And Argyle Elementary Schools

Released on September 18, 2020

This morning, Deputy Premier and Education Minister Gordon Wyant was joined by Parks, Culture and Sport Minister and Regina Gardiner Park MLA Gene Makowsky as well as Regina Public and Regina Catholic School Division officials, and City of Regina officials to celebrate confirmation of the future site of the new Argyle Elementary School and École St. Pius X joint-use facility.

“For nearly 70 years, École St. Pius X and Argyle Elementary School have played an important role in the Lakeview community, delivering quality education to Regina students,” Wyant said.  “By investing in this joint-use facility today, we are committing to a learning environment that supports our staff and students and provides a boost to our provinces economic recovery.”

The Government of Saskatchewan is investing $47 million into this new joint-use school facility.  It will be built at the site of the current Argyle Elementary School, and can accommodate 800 students – 400 on each side.  The facility will also include a child care centre with space for 51 young children.

While an early design for the joint-use facility was released in May 2020, the Ministry of Education is currently working with both divisions and a project manager with JPH Consulting Ltd. to ensure that the facility meets the educational and safety needs of all students, staff and the community.  The final design is expected to be completed March 2021.

“This new school build has been welcomed by the community,” Regina Catholic School Division Board Chair Bob Kowalchuk said.  “We are excited to be able to provide Catholic, faith-based education in a building which functions well for us, as well as the nearby Argyle School.  These students and families are already a community. The students play sports together, the families share park space and together they will be able to learn side by side.”

“After a long wait, I know that the Argyle school community will welcome the announcement of a new school building to meet the needs of this vibrant community,” Regina Board of Education Chairperson Katherine Gagne said.  “Working together with the St. Pius school community will create two new school buildings that may help build the heart of this community and promote its student’s changing educational needs.”

Since 2007, the Government of Saskatchewan has committed more than $1.9 billion toward 85 major school infrastructure projects, as well as numerous smaller projects such as portable classrooms and preventative maintenance and renewal.
