Today, Premier Scott Moe was joined by Deputy Premier and Education Minister Gordon Wyant and Regina Pasqua MLA Muhammad Fiaz as well as representatives from Regina Public School Division and Regina Catholic School Division to announce a brand new joint-use facility in Regina.
“Our government is proud to announce this new school in Harbour Landing’s growing community, where it will serve students, staff and families for years to come,” Moe said. “These investments in education infrastructure will provide an economic boost to our province and support job growth in our communities.”
The new project is part of the Government of Saskatchewan’s 2020-21 Budget, which provides $130.4 million in funding to invest in school infrastructure and begin the planning and design phases of new schools.
The two new elementary schools will support the learning and community development of families and students in Regina’s growing Harbour Landing neighbourhood for years to come.
The $40 million joint-use project will provide space for 400 Regina Public and 250 Regina Catholic students, based on projected enrollment numbers from each school division. While planning is still underway, the new facility is expected to provide a large community resource space, adaptable state-of-the-art learning environments and dedicated space for a developmental classroom program.
The province is currently working with the City of Regina, Regina Public School Division and Regina Catholic School Division to determine a location for the new school in Harbour Landing.
“We have known for a while now that the Harbour Landing community needs another elementary school,” Regina Catholic School Division Board Chair Bob Kowalchuk said. “With the growth the City of Regina has experienced in this southwest community, it’s important to have enough space for 21st century education. We believe this unique new area of our city needs this school to continue to thrive.”
“Building a second school in the Harbour Landing community is a testament to the growth throughout our city and the need for schools that meet the changing educational needs of our young people,” Regina Board of Education Chairperson Katherine Gagne said. “During this time of significant disruption to the lives of our students, this announcement of a new joint-use school may give hope and stability to our school families and will help us build our city's educational future.”
In response to the expansion of the Harbour Landing community over recent years, the province also collaborated with both Regina school divisions to design and plan École Harbour Landing and St. Kateri Tekakwitha Elementary Schools. These schools have been significant hubs for community gatherings as well as Prekindergarten and child care programming since their grand opening in September 2017.
Since 2007, the province has committed more than $1.9 billion toward school infrastructure projects, which includes 57 new or replacement schools and 28 major renovations as well as numerous smaller projects such as portable classrooms and preventative maintenance and renewal.
