Today, Social Services Minister Paul Merriman joined community members, dignitaries and group home residents in Saskatoon to celebrate the grand opening of a new Light of the Prairies group home.The home will provide residential supports for two former residents of Valley View Centre, one person from the community and will have a space for a person with emerging needs. The government provided $489,263 in annual funding for the group home.
“Our community partners play a large role in ensuring we have inclusive communities around our province,” Merriman said. “I’d like to thank Light of the Prairies for the decades of support they continue to provide for people with intellectual disabilities.”
Light of the Prairies has been supporting people with intellectual disabilities since 1988. The Ministry of Social Services has contracts with Light of the Prairies for seven group homes, two group living homes, day program supports and supported living programs.
“It is a great privilege for us to support these individuals as they enjoy their new home and community,” Light of the Prairies Executive Director Kevin Martens said. “We look forward to many days filled with new experiences and greater independence.”
This new group home supports the Saskatchewan Disability Strategy by creating residential services for people with disabilities. Saskatchewan residents and communities that have done work that aligns with the Disability Strategy are encouraged to share their accomplishments using the hashtag #SKDisability.
