Today, Social Services Minister Paul Merriman joined community members, dignitaries and group home residents in Saskatoon to celebrate the grand opening of a new Light of the Prairies group home.The home will provide residential supports for four former residents of Valley View Centre. The Government of Saskatchewan provided $502,367 in annual funding for the home.
“We are excited to welcome four people to their new home today in Saskatoon,” Merriman said. “I’d like to thank Light of the Prairies for the important part they play in creating inclusive communities with their homes.”
Light of the Prairies has been supporting people with intellectual disabilities since 1988. Social Services has contracts with Light of the Prairies for seven group homes, two group living homes, a day program and a supported living program.
“We are honoured to support these amazing people and to be a part of their lives,” Light of the Prairies Executive Director Kevin Martens said. “As we build healthy relationships together, the house becomes a home and provides an environment where we all live our best lives.”
This new group home supports the Saskatchewan Disability Strategy by creating residential services for people with disabilities. Saskatchewan residents and communities that have done work that aligns with the Disability Strategy are encouraged to share their accomplishments using the hashtag #SKDisability.
