July 22-26 Proclaimed Child And Youth In Care Week In Saskatchewan

Released on July 22, 2019

Saskatchewan has officially proclaimed July 22-26, 2019 as Child and Youth in Care Week.

The theme for this year’s celebration is Celebrating Youth Excellence.  Child and Youth in Care Week celebrates and reflects on the value and diversity of youth who are in, or from, care.  It provides an opportunity to let children and youth currently or previously in care know that their experiences, voices and knowledge are valued, and that they are not alone.

“Child and Youth in Care Week gives us the opportunity to recognize and thank care providers across the province for their unique skill set and unwavering commitment to our province’s youngest residents,” Social Services Minister Paul Merriman said.  “Our Government appreciates the support and services provided by the Saskatchewan Youth in Care and Custody Network to our province’s most vulnerable citizens.”

Child and Youth in Care Week in Saskatchewan began in 2014.  More than 500 youth celebrated with the Saskatchewan Youth in Care and Custody Network the unique experience of being in, or from, care.  The Government of Saskatchewan provided the Saskatchewan Youth in Care and Custody Network with annualized funding of $180,518 for 2019-20.

“The Saskatchewan Youth in Care and Custody Network is pleased to have the continued support of the Ministry of Social Services while we celebrate the resiliency and achievements of youth in and from government care during our 6th annual Child and Youth in Care Week,” Saskatchewan Youth in Care and Custody Network Acting Executive Director Darlene Domshy said.

The Saskatchewan Youth in Care and Custody Network is a non-profit community-based organization that supports and improves the lives of young people between the ages of 14 and 24 who are currently, or have previously been, in government care (foster care and/or custody).
