Home renovation projects like building a new deck and landscaping are common this time of year. Consumers should be diligent and proactive if working with a professional contractor.
Before hiring a contractor, consumers should:
1. Get quotes and a contract in writing
Establish costs, agree on the work to be done and set the timelines.2. Get a reference check and do research
Ask to speak with previous clients. Ask them if the price was fair, if work was done on time or if there were any problems.Check to see if the contractor is listed in the Better Business Bureau directory at https://www.bbb.org/saskatchewan or call 1-888-352-7601). If so, you will be able to view their rating and read customer reviews.
3. View previous work
The best way to judge the quality of work is to see it yourself. Ask the contractor for pictures or visit previous jobs in person (ask permission if it’s private property) to see the quality.4. Ask about insurance
Contractors should be able to show certificates of property damage and liability insurance. If someone gets hurt or something gets damaged, homeowners don’t want to be on the hook.
