Construction Tender Release Includes Dozens of Highway and Infrastructure Projects Worth $220 Million

With $850 million worth of work in progress or completed this year, plans are already underway for next year’s highway construction.

The Government of Saskatchewan has released its tenders for the 2018 construction season.  The tenders include more than 550 kilometres of surface improvements and consist of more than 30 construction contracts, half a dozen bridge and culvert projects and more than a dozen crushing and stockpiling contracts worth an estimated $220 million.

“Even though we have multiple highway and infrastructure projects currently under construction this year, we find that tendering earlier will help us secure contractors and get an early jump for next year,” Highways and Infrastructure Minister David Marit said.  “This type of planning puts us in a strong position, so materials and contractors are ready to go when construction begins next spring.”

Projects to be tendered include:
  • Highway 2, north of Moose Jaw;
  • Highway 4, upgrading north of Val Marie;
  • Highway 6, resurfacing north of Raymore;
  • Highway 7, grading and paving near Delisle and resurfacing west of Kindersley;
  • Highway 10 and 16, resurfacing south of Yorkton and near Springside;
  • Highway 11, resurfacing near Lumsden, near Dundurn and south of Saskatoon;
  • Highway 32, resurfacing near Cabri;
  • Highway 35 and 39, resurfacing south and southeast of Weyburn;
  • Highway 36, upgrading south of Willow Bunch;
  • Highway 123, grade raising;
  • Highway 155, resurfacing north of Green Lake; and
  • Highway 255 and 35, resurfacing south and west of Tobin Lake.
“The scale and timing of the fall tender schedule allows our members to meet the infrastructure needs of taxpayers and create an environment that will sustain our economic growth,” Saskatchewan Heavy Construction Association President Shantel Lipp said.  “Long-term investments and early tendering help the industry plan ahead, get crews in place and ramp up to commence work as soon as possible.”

The Tender Release represents the initial slate of projects that will comprise the ministry's construction program for 2018.  All tenders can be found at www.sasktenders.ca. 

In addition to dozens of projects currently under construction, work begins on two new bridge projects this week:
  • Highway 4 near Cadillac, bridge construction; and
  • Highway 9 south of Whitewood, bridge construction.
