On September 30, 2016, the Government of Saskatchewan will present a Fransaskois flag to the Village of Debden and area in recognition of the region’s Francophones and their cultural heritage.“The pride and determination that residents have demonstrated toward preserving their Francophone language and culture in this community is incredible,” Provincial Secretary Nadine Wilson said. “It is an honour to present them with this flag to recognize their achievements as they strengthen the Fransaskois community.”
The Fransaskois flag was adopted as a provincial emblem in 2005 to recognize the status of French as one of Canada’s official languages and to acknowledge the heritage of Saskatchewan’s Francophones and their significant contributions to the province.
A commemorative plaque will also be presented to the community, where some of the first pioneers came to the province from Quebec in 1912. Today, the community is home to approximately 500 people, many of whom speak French.
The flag and plaque have been presented to the communities of Regina, Duck Lake, Ferland, St. Denis, Gravelbourg, Zenon Park, Saskatoon, North Battleford, Bellegarde, Ponteix, Prince Albert, Moose Jaw and St. Isidore de Bellevue as part of a province-wide recognition initiative.
