The qualities that make Saskatchewan one of the most attractive jurisdictions in the world for mining investment are the focus of the 47th annual Saskatchewan Geological Open House in Saskatoon. The event, co-hosted by the Ministry of the Economy’s Saskatchewan Geological Survey (SGS) and the Saskatchewan Geological Society, takes place today and tomorrow and presents the results of minerals-related geoscience research carried out in the province by the SGS during the past year.
“This is a highly anticipated event for the mining industry in Saskatchewan, thanks to the quality of the information and the opportunities it creates for investment and activity,” Energy and Resources Minister Dustin Duncan said. “Saskatchewan has significant mineral resources, but we also have the kind of supportive policies, infrastructure and operating environment that industry looks for when determining where to invest.”
The Fraser Institute’s 2015 Survey of Mining Companies ranks Saskatchewan first in Canada and second in the world for mining investment attractiveness among the 109 jurisdictions evaluated. The data made available at the open house is intended to help industry to plan and implement exploration programs for the following year.
The event also provides a venue for networking as well as for presentations and discussions by industry representatives on exploration and development activities in Saskatchewan. The SGS will also provide details about ongoing efforts to improve access to high-quality geoscience information and government services in the province, such as enhancements to the Geological Atlas of Saskatchewan and work currently underway to complete the scanning of historic mineral assessment files.
In 2015, the value of Saskatchewan's mineral production was the second highest in Canada at approximately $8.2 billion; exploration expenditures for the year were $211 million, and are expected to reach $224 million in 2016.
