Province Announces Funding for Regina Open Door Society's Newcomer Welcome Centre

Released on April 23, 2015

The Government of Saskatchewan is pleased to announce support for the Regina Open Door Society’s Newcomer Welcome Centre to support newcomers to the Regina area as they adjust to life on the prairies.  Funding of $290,702 was presented today at the centre.

The Newcomer Welcome Centre is a partnership between the Regina Open Door Society, the Regina Public School Board, the Regina Catholic School Board and the Conseil des écoles fransaskoises, and is jointly funded by the Government of Saskatchewan and Citizenship and Immigration Canada.

“Since 2007, more than 63,000 immigrants from 185 countries have settled in Saskatchewan,” Minister responsible for Immigration, Jobs, Skills and Training Jeremy Harrison said.  “The Newcomer Welcome Centre is a key first stop for those who are arriving to the Regina area.  This one-stop shop is a welcoming place for newcomers to access all of the information they need to ease their transition into our schools, community and job market.”

Since its opening in 2009, more than 10,000 individual clients have used the Newcomer Welcome Centre to access a variety of services, including school assessments, language assessments, settlement information, and referrals to agencies and services that can best meet an individual’s specific needs, from housing to health services to employment centres.

The Regina Newcomer Welcome Centre serves immigrants and refugees who are permanent residents or new Canadians, as well as temporary foreign workers and international students.

“Our centre is helping clients have a positive first experience in our province by giving them all the tools and information they need to make informed decisions upon their arrival,”  Newcomer Welcome Centre Manager Gratta Nimbeshaho said.  “Thanks to the Government of Saskatchewan’s support of the Newcomer Welcome Centre, we are able to make this major life change a little easier for each person that comes through our doors.”
