Premier's Commendation Award Recipients Announced

Released on April 21, 2015

The Saskatchewan Premier’s Commendation Award was presented today to eight people who have distinguished themselves through their courageous action, empathy and generosity.

“It’s been said heroes are ordinary people who make themselves extraordinary,” Premier Brad Wall said.  “The remarkable stories of the individuals we honour today demonstrate the truth in that adage.  When called upon to help others in need, sometimes in the most dangerous, desperate circumstances, these outstanding citizens put aside concerns about their own safety and answered the call.  In the words of Sir Walter Scott, they had “the will to do, and the soul to dare”, And we are forever in their debt.”

The Premier’s Commendation Award was created to acknowledge exemplary service or actions of Saskatchewan citizens.  This year, two Americans are also being recognized for their service to the province.

“Saskatchewan people are renowned for their community spirit and their compassion,” Wood River MLA and chair of the commendation committee Yogi Huyghebaert said.  “This award is another way we can recognize individuals who do remarkable things to help others.”

The 2014 recipients are:
  • Travis Laycock, Saskatoon;
  • Bill Nagel, Regina;
  • Darren Katzell, Yorkton;
  • Chris Katzell, Saskatoon;
  • Blaine Switzer, Swift Current;
  • Jonathan Thomason, Rush Lake;
  • Anthony Williams, Burlington, North Carolina (awarded posthumously); and
  • Bob McGrath, Teaneck, New Jersey.
