Moose Jaw to Host Annual Provincial Skills Contest

Released on April 17, 2015

Skills Canada Saskatchewan is gearing up to hold the 17th Annual Saskatchewan Provincial Skills Competition in Moose Jaw on April 16 and 17, 2015.  Events will take place at Saskatchewan Polytechnic/ Moose Jaw Campus, Regina Campus, A.E. Peacock High School, Central High School, and the Saskatchewan Pipefitters Joint training Board in Regina.

The provincial skills competition brings together 440 secondary and post-secondary students and apprentices from across the province.  Skills Canada Saskatchewan’s Olympic-style competition provides a forum for students to compete and showcase their skills in numerous trade and technology areas, from welding to machine shop to 3D animation.  Gold medal winners qualify to represent Saskatchewan at the Skills Canada National competition in Saskatoon in May 2015.

“Our goal is to showcase to Saskatchewan’s prospective employers the skill levels of our future work force in the skilled trades and technology areas, in an effort to help alleviate the labour shortage in our province,” Skills Canada Saskatchewan Executive Director Al Gabert said.  “The competition demonstrates the vast number of career opportunities available to people interested in pursuing a career in a trades or technology field.  We promote excellence and safety in everything we do.”

"The provincial Skills Canada competition is a highlight of the year," Saskatchewan Polytechnic's Provost and Vice-president, Academic Dr. Anne Neufeld said.  "It profiles a broad range of applied learning opportunities, and it gives students an opportunity to demonstrate their newly acquired skills and expertise."

“The Skills Canada Saskatchewan provincial competition is a phenomenal display of talent,” Saskatchewan Apprenticeship and Trade Certification Commission (SATCC) CEO Jeff Ritter said.  “These skills can be developed into an enjoyable and rewarding lifelong career.”
