The Government of Saskatchewan continues to support northern programming that assists victims of interpersonal violence and abuse. The five organizations will receive more than $1.7 million.
“Responding to violence and abuse in this province is everyone’s responsibility,” Prince Albert Northcote MLA Victoria Jurgens said on behalf of Jutice Minister and Attorney General Gordon Wyant. “With this support, these important programs will continue to deliver much needed assistance to northern residents who find themselves dealing with interpersonal violence in their lives.”
In 2015-16, $1.7 million will be divided among the following organizations:
- La Ronge Native Women’s Council Inc.;
- Northern Transportation and Support Initiative;
- Prince Albert Safe Shelter for Women Inc.;
- YWCA of Prince Albert; and
- Prince Albert Mobile Crisis Unit Co-operative Ltd.
“Thanks to the continued funding commitment from the Ministry of Justice, thousands of women and children will continue to have a safe place to turn to when they are fleeing an abusive situation,” Prince Albert Safe Shelter for Women Executive Director Carol Soles said. “We are not proud of the reasons the shelter exists, but we are proud of the services and programs we provide to enable, empower and support women and their children to move forward in their lives.”
Province-wide, the Ministry of Justice's Interpersonal Violence and Abuse Program is providing more than $11 million toward interpersonal violence programming this fiscal year.
