Record-Breaking Non-Residential Building Permits in April

Released on June 5, 2014

Saskatchewan’s commercial builders were busy on construction sites across the province, with non-residential building permits jumping by a record 105 per cent to $125 million (seasonally adjusted) in April 2014, compared to the same period last year.

The month-over-month value of building permits also increased by 29 per cent (seasonally adjusted) compared to March 2013, according to a Statistics Canada report released today.  This was the third highest increase among the provinces, for a total value of $249 million.

“Saskatchewan has one of the best and most competitive investment climates anywhere in the country,” Economy Minister Bill Boyd said.  “It is obvious that businesses are seeing great promise in what this province has to offer, especially when we are seeing a spike in the number of large commercial and industrial projects that are going up in our communities.”

On a yearly basis, building permits increased 1.9 per cent (seasonally adjusted), landing Saskatchewan in third spot in terms of percentage change among the provinces.

“Saskatchewan’s construction industry continues to show great strength and expansion, thanks in part to our vibrant economy and steady growth,” Boyd said.  “An increase in the value and number of building permits in Saskatchewan means plenty of good paying jobs for our hard working men and women.”
