Saskatchewan Transportation Company Annual Report Released

Released on April 7, 2014

The Saskatchewan Transportation Company (STC) released its 2013 Annual Report today highlighting a strong customer satisfaction rating.

“STC provides a valuable intercity bus service to Saskatchewan,” Minister responsible for STC Don McMorris said.  “This is confirmed with the satisfaction rating of customers rising to an all-time high of 94 per cent.”

Promotions to encourage ridership in 2013 included popular Senior Seat Sales, the summer-based Youth Pass and exclusive offers for Ride Rewards members.  The company also introduced online ticket sales and social media to encourage people to use STC’s passenger and parcel express services.

“The 2013 fiscal year included some tough, cost-saving measures and STC worked hard to mitigate the future growth in the subsidy,” McMorris said.  “In addition, STC continues to promote ridership growth by enhancing the customer experience with such things as extended legroom, upgraded Wi-Fi service, online e-Tickets, and a new Facebook page.”

Changes in the transportation industry in 2011 and 2012 continued to impact the company’s bottom line in 2013.  STC’s ridership numbers have proven to be difficult to recover due to the decreased number of connecting schedules in Saskatchewan’s neighbouring provinces.  Reductions in ridership numbers and parcel express revenues combined with increasing costs had a negative impact on the organization’s annual subsidy.

These challenges were met with decisions that included the discontinuation of three under-utilized routes.  Approval was sought and granted from the Highway Traffic Board to discontinue Blaine Lake – North Battleford, Regina – Lanigan, and Eastend – Swift Current/Mossbank schedules.  These schedule changes will save the organization approximately $300,000 annually.

“Route reductions are not decisions that are taken lightly,” STC President and CEO Shawn Grice said.  “The company also undertook other cost-saving measures including purchasing used coaches and refurbishing existing coaches to enhance the customer experience in the most efficient manner possible.”

Highlights of STC’s 2013 Annual Report include:
  • Passenger satisfaction rating of 94 per cent (2012: 93 per cent).
  • Operating Grant of $10.5 million (2012: $9.2 million).
  • Capital Grant of $3.5 million (2012: $2.3 million).
  • $16.4 million in revenues (2012: $15.9 million).
  • $29.8 million in operating expenses (2012: $28.8 million).
  • Carried 276,113 passengers (2012: 282,119).
  • Travelled approximately 3.1 million scheduled miles (4.99 million kilometres), serving 284 Saskatchewan communities.
