RESERVE FORCES DAY PROCLAIMED

Released on September 20, 2013

Provincial Military Liaison D.F. (Yogi) Huyghebaert announced the Government of Saskatchewan has proclaimed September 22 as Reserve Forces Day in Saskatchewan, to formally recognize the sacrifice and service provided by reservists in our province.

“This day is dedicated to all of our everyday citizens who voluntarily devote their time to military service,” Huyghebaert said.  “Our reservists defend our country while living, working and raising families in our communities.  We owe our gratitude to these part-time soldiers, sailors and airmen/airwomen.”

The Canadian Forces Liaison Council in Saskatchewan requested the proclamation.

Approximately one-third of the Canadian Forces are reservists.  In Saskatchewan, there are roughly 600 reservists that dedicate their time – evenings, weekends and weeks during the summer months – to train for their military specialty and some serve in combat roles overseas.

Not only have our Saskatchewan reservists served on Canadian Forces missions in the Middle East, Cyprus, Bosnia, Haiti, Africa and Afghanistan – they have also responded to domestic emergencies such as floods, forest fires, search and rescue missions and relief operations.
