GOVERNMENT OF SASKATCHEWAN PROCLAIMS SASKATCHEWAN BIOTECH WEEK 2013

Released on September 20, 2013

Agriculture Minister Lyle Stewart has proclaimed the week of September 20-27 as Saskatchewan Biotech Week 2013, in conjunction with the 10th National Biotechnology Week.

“Saskatchewan is already home to more than 30 per cent of Canada’s agricultural biotechnology activity, and our government continues to support and invest in agriculture research,” Stewart said.  “We host two renowned research universities, three research parks and numerous research and training institutions, all of which provide solutions to help our producers feed a growing world population.”

The Government of Saskatchewan is committed to supporting and promoting research and commercialization of biotechnology in Canada and around the world.

Saskatchewan’s Plan for Growth aims to increase crop production by 10 million tonnes, increase agri-food exports by 50 per cent, establish Saskatchewan as an international leader in biosciences and increase value-added opportunities in the province by 2020, targets that will be met through investment and innovation in biotechnology.

The Ministry of Agriculture’s 2013 agriculture research budget is $27.7 million, the largest agricultural research budget on record and an increase of more than 104 per cent since 2007.  This also includes $3 million for the Global Institute for Food Security which will undertake research into technological, economic, nutritional and environmental improvements to the food supply system in Saskatchewan and around the world.

“Saskatchewan is a powerhouse for biotechnology in Canada,” Ag-West Bio Inc. President and CEO Dr. Wilf Keller said.  “We have the infrastructure, talent and business environment to create limitless opportunities for biotech research and industry, in everything from genomics to specialty crop products.”

As in past years, numerous events will be held throughout the week to highlight the industry.  For a full list of activities in Saskatchewan, see the Ag-West Bio Inc. website at www.agwest.sk.ca.
