Planners’ Association Gets New Name as it Celebrates 50 Years
In addition to celebrating its 50th anniversary this year the group representing Saskatchewan’s community planners has a new name and revised provincial legislation governing the profession.
The Community Planning Profession Act, 2013, came into force on Sunday, September 15, after the Association of Professional Community Planners of Saskatchewan requested amendments last year, which included changing the name of the Association to the Saskatchewan Professional Planners Institute.
“Planners are among those professionals on the front line of Saskatchewan’s growth, designing such things as new neighbourhoods and revitalizing old ones,” Government Relations Minister Jim Reiter said. “It makes sense to be refreshing this legislation now.”
The new Act further supports labour mobility across provinces and reflects current terminology, designations and examinations at the national level. It also provides the Institute with administrative and regulatory powers and professional conduct and discipline committees consistent with other professions’ legislation in Saskatchewan.
“The new Act and bylaws are a solid foundation for the Institute,” Saskatchewan Professional Planners Institute (Association of Professional Community Planners of Saskatchewan) Executive Director Marilyn Steranka said. “Planners help ensure public interests are represented as we work together to meet the challenges of growth and strive to develop vibrant and successful communities.”
Saskatchewan’s planners and their colleagues will be holding their annual conference in Regina September 16, 17 and 18.
The Minister of Government Relations is responsible for the Act governing the planning profession.
