A Habitat for Humanity partner family in Duck Lake will soon have a home to call their own, thanks to $50,000 in funding assistance from the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation. Construction of the home was officially launched today at a sod-turning ceremony in Duck Lake.
“This project is a wonderful example of people from all backgrounds working together to help Saskatchewan families and to build sustainable communities,” Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation June Draude said. “We are proud to support Habitat for Humanity and its partners as we continue to implement our Saskatchewan Plan for Growth and help families improve their quality of life.”
“Duck Lake is a unique initiative because the partnerships involved will allow for affordable housing expansion in this community while offering trades training opportunities to Willow Cree Healing Lodge,” Habitat for Humanity Prince Albert President Morris Sawchuk said.
Located at 345 – 4th Street in Duck Lake, the project will consist of the new construction of a bungalow of approximately 1,000 square feet with a partially developed basement and three to four bedrooms. The home is expected to be complete in spring of 2014.
The project will also be constructed with support from CORCAN; as inmates of the Willow Cree Healing Lodge, a minimum security facility located in Duck Lake, will construct the home. CORCAN is a special operating agency of Correctional Service Canada (CSC). Enbridge Pipelines Inc. donated $50,000 toward the build, the Town of Duck Lake donated the lot and, in addition, the Habitat National Office will be contributing $10,000 through a foundation directed at aboriginal housing.
Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization working toward a world where everyone has a safe and decent place to live. The organization mobilizes volunteers and partners to build homes that provide families of low-income with access to affordable homeownership. Each partner family selected by Habitat for Humanity will contribute a minimum of 500 hours of volunteer labour toward the building of their home and other Habitat homes.
