GOVERNMENT OF SASKATCHEWAN AND HABITAT FOR HUMANITY TEAM UP TO BUILD A HOME IN PRINCE ALBERT

Released on September 6, 2013

The Government of Saskatchewan is partnering with Habitat for Humanity (Habitat) in Prince Albert to help support another Saskatchewan family in need of safe, quality housing.  The province, through Saskatchewan Housing Corporation (SHC), is contributing a total of $50,000 to help build the home located at 460 – 19th Street East in Prince Albert.

“This is a tremendous partnership that will not only put homeownership within reach of a Habitat partner family, but it will also help create a healthy housing environment in this community,”  Prince Albert Carlton MLA Darryl Hickie said on behalf of Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation June Draude.  “Funding Habitat initiatives like this one meets the goals of our Saskatchewan Plan for Growth, which includes increasing housing supply across the province.”

The home will be built with support from Carlton Comprehensive High School and Prince Albert Collegiate Institute.  Construction is estimated to be completed in the spring of 2014.

“This will be the fourth high school build in Prince Albert,” Habitat for Humanity Prince Albert President Morris Sawchuk said.  “The students present a viable means for Habitat for Humanity to expand our build capacity, as well as provide an excellent opportunity for interested students to explore a future in trades training.  We thank all our partners for coming together to help make this build happen.”

In the 2013-14 Budget, the province is committing an additional $2 million to help build 40 new Habitat for Humanity homes throughout the province.  This represents the largest budget increase in funding to Habitat for Humanity in Canada, and brings the province’s overall commitment to Habitat for Humanity to $7.1 million since March 2009.  This total includes $600,000 from the Province’s Summit Action Fund, which will create sustainable revolving land trusts in Regina, Saskatoon and Prince Albert to assist in the purchase and development of land.

Each partner family selected by Habitat for Humanity will contribute a minimum of 500 hours of volunteer labour toward the building of their home and other Habitat homes.

Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization working toward a world where everyone has a safe and decent place to live.  The organization mobilizes volunteers and partners to build homes that provide families of low-income with access to affordable homeownership.
