Five pop-up workshops, led by local artists, will take place at the Legislative Building throughout the month of September as part of an artist-in-residence research project.
Laura Hale is leading the research to explore the possibility of a longer-term artist-in-residence program at the Legislative Building. The project will identify potential partners, create a cultural inventory and produce a program blueprint.
“Art and cultural activities create a vibrant quality of life for the people of Saskatchewan,” Minister responsible for the Provincial Capital Commission Kevin Doherty said. “A strong economy attracts people to our growing province and a strong cultural sector helps retain them.”
The workshops will lead up to the conclusion of this three-month artist residency research project at the end of September and are as follows:
Monday, September 9 – Re-Interpreting Shape and Form
10 a.m. – 2 p.m. in the Qu’Appelle Gallery in the Legislative Building
Led by: Jody Greenman-Barber (www.youtube.com/watch?v=_IxOOgOpnuw)
Working with clay, participants will be given a simple animated wheel-thrown cup form (in a wet/leather hard stage) to interpret, explore and create into something different. Jody will take the artwork, glaze and re-fire it and deliver them back to the Legislative Building. She will bring only 50 cups, so be there early!
Thursday, September 12 – Let’s Make Weeds!
10 a.m. – 2 p.m. in the Qu’Appelle Gallery in the Legislative Building
Led by: Tamara Unroe (http://reartcycle.ca/artists.php)
A misunderstood plant, full of mischief and spirit, the dandelion is an unsung hero of our landscape. Come help multi-disciplinary artist and shadow puppeteer Tamara Unroe create a field of dandelions for an upcoming production. Dandelions will be made from sisal, bailer twine, wire, hot glue and various found objects.
Saturday, September 14 – Material History
12 p.m. – 4 p.m. on Legislative Building front landing
Led by: Brendan Schick (www.BrendanSchick.com)
Contribute to a collaborative drawing collage lead by artist Brendan Schick. Explore the Legislative Building’s exterior in detail and look for the fossils in the Tyndall stone to trace. Cut out the tracing and adhere it to a collaborative group-produced artwork.
Monday, September 16 – In the Write Space
10 a.m. – 2 p.m. in the Legislative Library
Led by: Bernadette Wagner (http://thishotplace.com/)
Those interested in exploring their artistic side through the written word, or those who need to make time for writing, want to become familiar with their creative process, or are thinking about revising some work, bring a pen, paper and an imagination for a fun and fast-paced hour of writing.
Tuesday – Thursday, September 17- 19 – Merit Badge Project
11 a.m. – 1 p.m. in the Qu’Appelle Gallery in the Legislative Building (September 17)
11 a.m. – 1 p.m. in the Legislative Library (September 18)
11 a.m. – 1 p.m. on the Legislative Building front landing (September 19)
Led by: Laura Hale (www.laurahale.net)
A merit badge is a symbol of achievement. It is recognition for an accomplishment and commitment to reaching a goal. The Legislative Building represents the character, ambition and spirit of the people of Saskatchewan. “From many people’s strengths” is the provincial motto. Join Laura in the creation of a merit badge using felt and embroidery thread to symbolize personal strengths and accomplishments.
This artist-in-residence project is supported by the Saskatchewan Arts Board and SaskCulture Inc., through the Creative Partnerships program, with funding from the Saskatchewan Lotteries Trust Fund for Sport, Culture and Recreation.
All of the workshops are open to the public and are free of charge, however, registration is required. For more information and to register, call Laura at 306-737-7517 or email her at sasklegart@gmail.com.
