TWO NEW GROUP HOMES FOR PEOPLE WITH INTELLECTUAL DISABILITIES OPEN IN NORTH BATTLEFORD

Released on September 5, 2013

Grand opening ceremonies are being held today for two new homes for people with intellectual disabilities in North Battleford.

The Ministry of Social Services provided $550,000 in capital funding for the construction of the two homes, and an additional $864,472 in operating funding for the current fiscal year.  Battlefords Residential Services Inc. will operate the group homes, providing services for 11 individuals in the community.

“This is an important day for North Battleford,” Social Services Minister June Draude said.  “All across our province, organizations like Battlefords Residential Services are helping people with intellectual disabilities play an active role in their communities.  Our government is proud to support those efforts.”

Battlefords Residential Services Inc. supports 34 individuals in six group homes, provides day programming for 10 people, and independent living services for another 15 clients.

“We wish to thank the Ministry of Social Services for the funding and support we have received, which has enabled us to complete these two beautiful homes,” Battlefords Residential Services Inc. Board Chair Yvonne Nyholt said.  “They will be a great asset to our organization, our clients and staff.”

“Our government’s Plan for Growth includes a commitment to make Saskatchewan the best place to live for people with disabilities,” Draude said.  “The successful completion of this project, and others like it across the province, demonstrates that commitment.”
