CONSTRUCTION BEGINS ON A NEW GROUP HOME IN ESTERHAZY

Released on October 31, 2013

Construction on a new home in Esterhazy for people with intellectual disabilities was launched today with an official sod-turning ceremony.

The residence is being built and operated by Langenburg and District Activity Centre (LDAC) Inc. through a funding partnership with the Government of Saskatchewan.  Once completed, the home will provide living spaces and offer day programming for five people in the community.  The Ministry of Social Services provided capital funding of $400,000 for the project.

“Our government fully supports the efforts of organizations like LDAC to meet the needs of people with intellectual disabilities in their community,” Melville-Saltcoats MLA Bob Bjornerud said on behalf of Social Services Minister June Draude.  “All across our province, group homes like this one we’re turning sod at today are playing an important role in helping people with intellectual disabilities to be included in their communities.”

In addition to the capital funding, Social Services will also provide more than $460,000 in annual funding to LDAC for the operation of the new group home, located at 314 Sussex Avenue in Esterhazy.

“The Langenburg and District Activity Centre is proud to help meet the needs of individuals with intellectual disabilities in this region,” LDAC Executive Director Ward Willson said.  “This new home will enable us to help meet the needs of five people in our community, by providing them with a safe, quality place to live and take part in day programming.”

LDAC has been supporting people with intellectual disabilities since 1980, and operates three group homes, a day program, a paper and cardboard recycling depot, and SARCAN depots in Langenburg and Esterhazy.

“Our government’s Plan for Growth includes a commitment to make Saskatchewan the best place to live for people with disabilities,” Bjornerud said.  “We’re proud to work with organizations like LDAC to make that goal a reality in communities across our province.”
