2013 COUNCIL OF THE FEDERATION LITERACY AWARD PRESENTED

Released on October 28, 2013

During a ceremony today at the Legislature, Education Minister Don Morgan presented Phyllis Jones with the 2013 Council of the Federation Literacy Award (COFLA).

"On behalf of Premier Brad Wall, I am pleased to present Ms. Jones with this prestigious award which is presented to one person in each province and territory every year," Morgan said.  "Her dedicated work in promoting literacy and engagement among learners of all ages is commendable, and has undoubtedly helped them achieve their academic and employment goals.”

Ms. Jones was nominated for the COFLA award by Jeff Barber, Director and CEO of the Regina Public Library, for her notable history of more than 24 years as a volunteer tutor.  For the past 11 years, she has led weekly English-language tutoring sessions for new immigrants, helping to orient them to their new home.  As a result of her efforts, learners have passed GED exams, found jobs, started businesses and continued their studies at the university level, which is an important contribution to our diverse and growing province.

“Among her many achievements with adult learners, her passion for tutoring is multi-generational, and has extended to the children of the adults she has helped,” Morgan said.  “Ms. Jones’ devotion to volunteerism and literacy has truly enriched the lives of the people in her community.”

Created by Canada's Premiers, the Council of the Federation (COF) Literacy Award has been awarded since 2005 in each province and territory.  The award recognizes the valuable contributions of Canadians in the field of literacy, including family, Aboriginal, health, workplace and community literacy.  Each award recipient receives a certificate signed by the Premier, a COF Literacy Award medallion and, in Saskatchewan, a small bursary in appreciation of the work literacy volunteers do.
