A Habitat for Humanity (Habitat) partner family achieved their dream of homeownership after receiving keys to their new home at a presentation held in Nipawin today. Sod was also turned to officially begin the construction of another Habitat home in the community.
The housing projects have been undertaken by Habitat for Humanity Prince Albert (Nipawin Chapter), with a total of $100,000 in funding assistance from the province through Saskatchewan Housing Corporation. The homes are located at 304-8th Avenue West and 1005-2nd Street West in Nipawin.
“Having a home to call our own is a dream that many of us share,” Carrot River Valley MLA Fred Bradshaw said on behalf of Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation June Draude. “Each Habitat home reflects the commitment of many people coming together to help a Saskatchewan family take advantage of the opportunities that our province offers. Our government is proud to support Habitat for Humanity and its partners as we continue to implement our Saskatchewan Plan for Growth.”
“I heartily congratulate the Nipawin chapter of Habitat for Humanity on the successful opening of their first home, and for breaking ground on a second Habitat home for another partner family,” Habitat for Humanity Prince Albert President Morris Sawchuk said. “We are committed to building a minimum of five Habitat homes in this community and look forward with enthusiasm to working with families who need our help, and with our partners to build safe, quality homes for them.”
In the 2013-14 Budget, the province committed an additional $2 million to help build 40 new Habitat for Humanity homes throughout the province. This represents the largest budget increase in funding to Habitat for Humanity in Canada, and brings the province’s overall commitment to Habitat for Humanity to $7.1 million since March 2009. This total includes $600,000 from the province’s Summit Action Fund, which will create sustainable revolving land trusts in Regina, Saskatoon and Prince Albert to assist in the purchase and development of land.
Each partner family selected by Habitat for Humanity will contribute a minimum of 500 hours of volunteer labour toward the building of their home and other Habitat homes.
Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization working toward a world where everyone has a safe and decent place to live. The organization mobilizes volunteers and partners to build homes that provide families of low-income with access to affordable homeownership.
