SHELLBROOK AREA CELEBRATES INTEGRATED HEALTH FACILITY GRAND OPENING

Released on October 21, 2013

Residents of Shellbrook and area now have access to a brand new integrated health care facility that brings local care providers together under one roof.  Premier Brad Wall joined local residents at a grand opening ceremony to celebrate the completion of Shellbrook’s Parkland Integrated Health Centre, which will better serve the care needs of all citizens in the area.

This new centre replaces the Parkland Terrace Nursing Home and Shellbrook Hospital, accommodating 34 long-term care beds and 20 acute care beds.  The facility also offers a comprehensive range of health services, including emergency, diagnostic and mental health and addictions services.

Also in attendance for today’s event were Health Minister Dustin Duncan, Minister Responsible for Rural and Remote Health Randy Weekes, municipal officials, and members of the Prince Albert Parkland Health Region and its board.

“We believe that all Saskatchewan people deserve timely access to the best possible health services in the best possible facilities, regardless of where they live,” Wall said.  “The infrastructure challenges in our health care system are great, but we are making record investments in all regions of the province to address those challenges.  This new integrated facility in Shellbrook is just one example of that commitment.”

“We are very excited that our patients, long-term care residents and community clients are able to access services in a facility that is more accessible and better suited for their needs,” Prince Albert Parkland Health Region Acting Board Chairperson Brenda Abrametz said.  “The design and layout will also assist our staff members, physicians and volunteers in providing safe, quality health care.  Thank you to the many community members who have committed so much of their time, energy, and funds to make this possible.”

“The opening of the Parkland Integrated Health Centre is a result of more than a decade of work by many volunteers who have been committed to improving the health care services in our area,” Shellbrook and Districts Health Services Project Chair Ron Ferster said.  “Community support for this project is what helped make it possible.  This new facility provides the physicians and staff members with a modern setting to care for the people in our region.”

The provincial government, Shellbrook and Districts Health Services Project, and area municipalities together invested $26.8 million in the new health centre.  The provincial share totalled $21.4 million.

Long-term care residents moved into the long-term care wing in late spring and full hospital services resumed in the summer.
