SASKATCHEWAN PROCLAIMS BDC SMALL BUSINESS WEEK 2013

Released on October 21, 2013

The Government of Saskatchewan is pleased to proclaim Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC) Small Business Week 2013 in the province, which will take place from October 20-26.  Several events are planned during the week to highlight the important role of the small business sector in the economic growth of Saskatchewan.

“Small businesses employ thousands of people across the province and account for a third of our GDP,” Economy Minister Bill Boyd said.  “Our positive economic growth has contributed to an increase in small businesses by 6.8 per cent from 2011 to 2012 and we expect this trend to continue into the future.”

Among the events taking place during the week is the launch of the new Saskatoon West Small Business Loans Association.  The Ministry of the Economy will also release the report Small Business Profile 2012, available at www.economy.gov.sk.ca/smallbusiness, which will examine the growth of the sector from 2007 to 2012.

A majority of Saskatchewan businesses, 98.4 per cent, are classified as small business (0-49 employees).  In 2012, the sector employed 144,000 people and contributed $15.5 billion to our gross domestic product.

During this week, there will be an announcement for a program targeted at young skilled tradespeople in Saskatchewan.  The business infosource office will be holding four business training events.  For more information, go to www.businessinfosource.ca/en/events/.
