GOVERNMENT AND INNOVATION SASKATCHEWAN PROCLAIM INNOVATION WEEK

Released on October 21, 2013

Saskatchewan is known the world over for its innovative people and companies and from October 21-26, their achievements will be celebrated as the Government of Saskatchewan and Innovation Saskatchewan proclaim Innovation Week.

The theme of this year’s week is “Pathways to Innovation,” which explores the many conduits that lead to innovation across Saskatchewan.  A number of activities have been planned for both Regina and Saskatoon, including seminars, tours, student outreach programs and a showcase on innovation in the food industry.

“Saskatchewan boasts a wealth of talented and creative individuals, a number of world-class research facilities, and considerable ground-breaking products and services that are supporting the core sectors of our growing economy,” Minister responsible for Innovation Saskatchewan Bill Boyd said.  “Major inventions – from enhanced oil and gas recovery methods to new agriculture seed varieties – have all been developed right here in this province.”

Innovation is a priority of government, featuring prominently in the Saskatchewan Plan for Growth – the government’s economic growth plan.  Innovation Saskatchewan, the province’s central agency for innovation growth and development, has made considerable contributions to Saskatchewan’s innovation landscape and to the primary goals of the growth plan.

“In a mature, resource-rich economy such as Saskatchewan’s, innovation is vital to continued prosperity,” Innovation Saskatchewan CEO Jerome Konecsni said.  “We are pleased to support events like Saskatchewan Innovation Week, which profiles the significant role that innovation has and will continue to play in building the future of this province.”

Saskatchewan Innovation Week was first held in 2012, in conjunction with the 100th anniversary of the University of Saskatchewan’s College of Engineering.  This year is the first year that the province has proclaimed the week.
