Five Saskatchewan families in need of housing will now have an affordable, safe place to call home, with help from the province and the Muskeg Lake Cree Nation (Muskeg).
The province, through Saskatchewan Housing Corporation (SHC), contributed approximately $600,000 toward the $871,000 cost of building the five homes. The funding balance of $271,000 was provided by Muskeg through equity, in-kind contributions and mortgage financing.
The announcement was made today in Blaine Lake, where ground was also broken for three additional rental homes in the community. SHC is contributing $535,000 toward the total project cost of $784,000, with Muskeg providing the remaining $249,000.
“Our government is pleased to work with our partners in communities to help provide more housing opportunities for families in need of a safe, quality home,” Rosthern-Shellbrook MLA Scott Moe said on behalf of Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation June Draude. “These homes are an important step forward in advancing the Saskatchewan Plan for Growth and continuing to develop partnerships with Aboriginal organizations to enhance economic, employment and training opportunities.”
"Our priority for Muskeg Lake Cree Nation members is a quality of life that is to the standard in Saskatchewan, and we know the value and importance of having safe and stable housing for our members,” Chief Clifford Tawpisin Jr. said. “Through this partnership with Muskeg Lake, Saskatchewan Housing Corporation and Corrections Canada, we have broken new ground for our members and the community of Blaine Lake reflecting the importance of respecting diversity and recognizing each partner’s valuable role. We are confident that the success of the project will grow and continue to build strong, reliable partnerships for communities in rural Saskatchewan for all residents.”
The first phase consists of three single-family bungalows and one duplex, for a total of five homes. The homes are located at 113 -1st Avenue East, 206 Railway Avenue East, 105 – 1st Avenue East and 105 – 2nd Avenue East in Blaine Lake. The bungalows each have three bedrooms and the semi-detached units each have two bedrooms.
The last phase of the project will consist of three single family, three-bedroom bungalows located at 215 – 1st Avenue East, 215 – 4th Avenue East and 321 -1st Avenue East in Blaine Lake. These homes will be constructed in partnership with Corrections Canada (CORCAN) and transported to Blaine Lake from the Riverbend Institution in Prince Albert.
SHC continues to work with the for-profit and not-for-profit sectors to develop new housing opportunities for First Nations people in Saskatchewan. Since November 2007, 284 affordable rental units have been completed for First Nations people and an additional 15 rental units are under construction. In addition, 162 units are complete or under construction in northern Saskatchewan, where clients are predominantly Aboriginal.
The Government of Saskatchewan has committed $344 million since March 2011 to housing initiatives. These investments are expected to result in more than 12,600 new and rejuvenated housing units in the province.
