Residents of the RM of McKillop and surrounding communities will benefit from joint federal and provincial funding to construct a municipal wastewater lagoon. Tom Lukiwski, Parliamentary Secretary to the Leader of the Government in the House of Commons and MP for Regina-Lumsden-Lake Centre on behalf of Michelle Rempel, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification and Last Mountain-Touchwood MLA Glen Hart on behalf of Government Relations Minister Jim Reiter were joined today by RM of McKillop Reeve Gary Gilbert to announce plans for the project.
“Our government is committed to helping communities meet their infrastructure needs so that they can continue to grow and thrive,” said Lukiwski. “With today’s announcement, we are demonstrating this commitment and helping to create jobs and growth, while improving the reliability of the wastewater treatment system.”
“To help meet the challenges of growth in Saskatchewan, it takes multiple levels of government working together to improve the quality of life for citizens,” Hart said. “This project is an example of that co-operation.”
“It is rewarding to see the Federal and Provincial government collectively supporting rural growth and development,” Gilbert said. “This funding will take a huge financial burden off the RM and surrounding municipality's ratepayers. This RM will be able to allow further new development and fulfill our Official Community Plan. Our RM is environmentally conscientious and the new waste management facilities will reinforce our commitment.”
The Governments of Canada and Saskatchewan are each investing $1,221,500 in the project, while the RM will contribute the balance of the total eligible project costs, which totals $3,664,500.
The construction of the new two-cell lagoon will improve the waste water treatment, including a measurable reduction in volume and improvement in the level of treatment of effluent and increased reliability. This new system will provide service for various organized hamlets, resort villages, and additional communities within the RM, and the disposal of wastewater will be more environmentally friendly. The project is conditionally approved pending an environmental review.
Under the Communities Component of the Building Canada Fund, the Government of Canada has invested in hundreds of important projects across the West with matching contributions from the western provinces. Thousands of Saskatchewan residents are now enjoying the benefits of this significant investment to Canada and Saskatchewan’s public infrastructure. Since 2007, the Governments of Canada and Saskatchewan have invested in almost 150 projects for a shared total investment of $210 million under BCF-CC.
