SASKATOON BUSINESS FINED MORE THAN $9,000 FOR SAFETY VIOLATIONS

Released on May 22, 2013

Cactus Roofing of Saskatoon, has pleaded guilty to six counts under the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act, 1993 for failure to utilize a fall protection system, failure to use appropriate footwear, failure to use appropriate protective headwear and failure to ensure a portable ladder is secured during use.  The company was fined $9,120 in Saskatoon Provincial Court on May 16, 2013.

The convictions are related to three separate incidents which occurred between February 2011 and June 2012.  Four convictions relate to the first incident, where a complaint was being investigated by an Occupational Health Officer who observed workers working on a roof with no fall protection, inappropriate footwear and headwear and using a non-compliant portable ladder.  One charge was stayed in relation to the incident.

The two other convictions relate to two incidents where inspections found workers working without fall protection.  Seven other charges were stayed.  One other charge related to a fourth incident was stayed.

OHS conducts approximately 4,000 worksite inspections annually to ensure standards are known, understood and enforced.  OHS has a zero tolerance approach to violations of fall protection.
