GOVERNMENT OF SASKATCHEWAN DECLARES PUBLIC WORKS WEEK

Released on May 17, 2013

The Government of Saskatchewan declared Public Works Week from May 19 to 25.

The week is designed to educate the public regarding the importance of public infrastructure and services.

“I am pleased we are able to recognize the hardworking people who build, manage and operate our public works,” Central Services Minister Nancy Heppner said.  “Their dedication and expertise is essential to the well being of our province.”

The Canadian Public Works Association’s Saskatchewan Chapter is made up of public works officials from government agencies across the province, as well as companies and suppliers of consulting services, technologies and equipment used in public works responsibilities.  The group promotes professional excellence and public awareness through education, advocacy and the exchange of knowledge.

“It’s important that the public understand the role of public works in society,” Canadian Public Works Association Saskatchewan Chapter President George Jakeman said.  “We’re the group responsible for road and street maintenance, waste collection and disposal, municipal water and wastewater operations, storm water management, transportation… all those services most of us would like to take for granted are being built and managed every day by hardworking professionals.  This is an opportunity to say thanks.”

The first celebration of Public Works Week took place over 50 years ago, and has become an annual event, celebrated during the third full week of May each year.
