VALLEY VIEW CENTRE FINAL REPORT PRESENTED TO GOVERNMENT

Released on May 10, 2013

Social Services Minister June Draude has received the final report from the Valley View Centre Transition Steering Committee, with recommendations on moving residents from Valley View Centre to community-based services and supports.

“I want to sincerely thank June Avivi and Doug Conn of the Valley View Centre Family Group and Gloria Mahussier of the Saskatchewan Association for Community Living for their strong leadership of this very important initiative,” Draude said.  “I congratulate the committee on completing their final report, and appreciate their commitment and compassion to the Valley View residents.  I am confident that their recommendations will help us achieve our vision of making Saskatchewan the best place to live for people with disabilities.”

The Transition Steering Committee’s 90-page final report contains a detailed analysis of the support needs of Valley View Centre residents; a summary of the Committee’s research findings; and a thorough discussion of the 14 recommendations that are intended to guide the development of alternate services and the transition of individuals from Valley View Centre to their new homes.

The Transition Steering Committee was established in February 2012 and is made up of representatives of the Valley View Centre Family Group, the Saskatchewan Association for Community Living and the Ministry of Social Services.

On February 8, 2013, the committee issued an interim report on work done to date, which included meeting with residents, families, direct care and therapy staff and advocates to understand the needs of all residents and families; and a review of academic literature and tours of other western provinces to look at the research, experiences and observations of others’ best practices for residential supports and transition planning.

“I look forward to reviewing the Transition Steering Committee’s report in detail, and expect to respond this summer,” Draude said.

The Transition Steering Committee’s final report is available at www.gov.sk.ca or www.sacl.org.
