YOUTH MENTORSHIP PROGRAM BRINGS NORTHERN STUDENTS TO CAPITAL

Released on May 3, 2013

This weekend, 31 students from northern high schools will travel to Regina to participate in the 2013 Youth Mentorship Program.  These Grade 9–12 students from Buffalo Narrows, Cumberland House, La Ronge, Montreal Lake, Pinehouse Lake and Stanley Mission will have the opportunity to learn about Saskatchewan’s provincial government and its history from May 5–8.

“Our province is growing and this program allows these students to see some of the many opportunities that exist after high school – whether that be post-secondary education or training, or a possible career in the public service, all while learning about government and the province’s history,” Minister responsible for the Provincial Capital Commission Kevin Doherty said.  “It’s great to see so many students interested in this program.  I welcome these students to Regina and hope they enjoy their time here.”

On May 6, these students will have a chance to see some of the educational and training opportunities that exist in their capital.  They will tour the University of Regina, the First Nations University of Canada, Government House and the RCMP Training Academy.

On May 7, they will spend the day learning about some of the opportunities that exist in the public service and about government and the legislative process.  They will also have an opportunity to tour the Royal Saskatchewan Museum.  Students will meet the Lieutenant Governor, the Speaker, Ministers, their MLAs and public servants.  They will tour the Legislative Building and be introduced in the Legislative Assembly with an opportunity to attend Question Period.

The Youth Mentorship Program is hosted by the Provincial Capital Commission with sponsorship through the Ministry of Education and the Government House Foundation.  This is the fourth consecutive year for this program.
