Released on May 1, 2013
May 2013 has been proclaimed Speech and Hearing Awareness Month in Saskatchewan by the Government.
“Hearing loss is a significant issue, affecting one in five people in our country,” Social Services Minister June Draude said. “In fact, hearing loss is now one of the fastest growing disabilities in North America, and affects tens of thousands of people in our province alone.”
Saskatchewan Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services (SDHHS) Inc. has been providing services to people who are deaf, deafened or hard of hearing since 1981. SDHHS services for clients include sign language interpreter and computerized notetaker services; a community service worker program; a discount hearing aid battery program; and access to information and a wide range of technical aids and devices.
“Recent strides in technology have greatly contributed to the quality of life and independence of all citizens with a hearing loss,” SDHHS Executive Director Roger Carver said. “Public awareness and education promotes a holistic perspective of the individual and dispels societal stigmas associated with hearing loss.”
“Our government appreciates the many important services provided by Saskatchewan Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services to people with speech and hearing disabilities,” Draude said. “We are proud to support their efforts, and work together to help make Saskatchewan the best place to live for people with disabilities.”
