PROVINCE AND HABITAT FOR HUMANITY HELP A MOOSE JAW FAMILY ACHIEVE HOMEOWNERSHIP

Released on March 26, 2013

A Habitat for Humanity Moose Jaw partner family are homeowners, thanks to a total of $50,000 in funding assistance from the province through Saskatchewan Housing Corporation.  The family received keys to their new three-bedroom home at a special ceremony held in Moose Jaw today.

“Our government is pleased to help Habitat for Humanity fill the need for homes that are affordable in Moose Jaw and in communities across the province,” Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation June Draude said.  “This shared commitment to housing has turned into a partnership that will have a lasting impact for Saskatchewan families.  It will also keep our province growing, improve our quality of life and continue to make Saskatchewan the best place in Canada to live, work and raise a family.”

“I am honoured to be participating in this Habitat for Humanity Moose Jaw key ceremony,” Habitat for Humanity Chair Matt Dominguez said.  “One of the greatest joys in life, besides God and family, is homeownership.  I am proud to be presenting this family with the keys to their new home.”

Since 2009, the province has dedicated $4.5 million in funding for Habitat for Humanity affiliates and chapters in Moose Jaw, Regina, Saskatoon, Yorkton, Prince Albert, Lloydminster, Nipawin and Humboldt to help build a total of 90 homes across the province.  With the 2013-14 Budget, the province is committing an additional $2 million to help build 40 new Habitat for Humanity homes.  This brings government’s commitment to a total of $6.5 million since March 2009.

Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization working toward a world where everyone has a safe and decent place to live.  The organization mobilizes volunteers and partners to build homes that provide families of low-income with access to affordable homeownership.  Each selected Habitat partner family contributes 500 hours of sweat equity to build their home and other Habitat for Humanity homes, and participates in valuable homeownership training and preparation sessions.
