PROVINCE HELPS HABITAT FOR HUMANITY GIVE THE GIFT OF A HOME TO A REGINA FAMILY

Released on March 25, 2013

A Regina family became homeowners today at a key ceremony hosted by Habitat for Humanity.  The province, through Saskatchewan Housing Corporation (SHC), contributed $50,000 to help Habitat for Humanity build the 1,100 square foot, bi-level home located at 861 Retallack Street.

“To help serve more families in need of a safe, stable home, we rely on exceptional partners such as Habitat for Humanity,” Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation June Draude said.  “Not only does this make good business sense, but it’s also simply the right thing to do.  This home, and other Habitat for Humanity homes across Saskatchewan, is an example of putting our province’s Plan for Growth in action and securing a better life for all citizens.”

“We are truly grateful to the Government of Saskatchewan and Saskatchewan Housing Corporation for their vision and their support for low-income, hard-working families,” Habitat for Humanity Regina CEO Dennis Coutts said.  “The increase in funding in the 2013-2014 provincial budget will help us help more families break the cycle of poverty and usher in a new era of production throughout the entire province.  We are grateful and proud to be a part of our province’s Plan for Growth.”

Since 2009, the province has dedicated $4.5 million in funding for Habitat for Humanity affiliates and chapters in Regina, Moose Jaw, Saskatoon, Yorkton, Prince Albert, Lloydminster, Nipawin and Humboldt to help build a total of 90 homes across the province.  With the 2013-14 Budget, the province committed an additional $2 million to help build 40 new Habitat for Humanity homes.

Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization working toward a world where everyone has a safe and decent place to live.  The organization mobilizes volunteers and partners to build homes that provide families of low-income with access to affordable homeownership.  Each selected Habitat partner family contributes 500 hours of sweat equity to build their home and other Habitat for Humanity homes, and participates in valuable homeownership training and preparation sessions.
