PROVINCE INVESTING $10 MILLION FOR AFFORDABLE HOUSING IN REGINA

Released on March 21, 2013

The Saskatchewan Housing Corporation is contracting with Deveraux Developments to build 48 new homes for Regina families.

This is the first announcement under the government’s plan to reinvest approximately $53 million in new housing for low and moderate-income families through the sale of government-owned single-family units.

“Investing in new multi-unit housing will make housing less expensive for the tenants and taxpayers and create hundreds of entry-level homeownership opportunities for Saskatchewan people,” Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation June Draude said.  “We will ensure that citizens in greatest housing need will have access to affordable housing.”

The new development will consist of four 12-unit buildings with eight two-bedroom and 40 three-bedroom apartments, two of which are accessible.  Construction is expected to begin in the fall and be complete by spring 2014.  The project is located in the Hawkstone subdivision in north Regina and has an estimated cost of $9.9 million.

“We are proud to be part of the first social housing project of this kind in Saskatchewan,” Deveraux Developments CEO Denis Jones said.  “I want to thank my staff and the staff at the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation for their dedication to this important housing solution.  I congratulate the government and Saskatchewan Housing for bringing affordable housing to our community.”

Saskatchewan Housing Corporation is planning to sell approximately 300 of its single-family units in Regina, Moose Jaw and Prince Albert.  These units, two-thirds of which were built between 1950 and 1975, will be replaced with modern and energy-efficient multi-unit housing in these communities.

The cost of operating the new housing will be $2 million less over the first five years alone.  Tenants themselves could see savings of $100 per month in utility costs.

Current tenants are being given the opportunity to purchase the single family home they are renting.  Eligible tenants will be given the opportunity to move to other social housing if they do not purchase their current unit.
