PROVINCE HELPS HABITAT FOR HUMANITY BUILD A HOME FOR A YORKTON FAMILY

Released on June 28, 2013

A Yorkton family will soon have a home to call their own, thanks to $50,000 in funding assistance from the Government of Saskatchewan through Saskatchewan Housing Corporation.  Construction of the home was officially launched today at a sod-turning ceremony.

“We are very pleased to help another Habitat for Humanity partner family experience the benefits of homeownership,” Yorkton MLA Greg Ottenbreit said on behalf of Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation June Draude.  “Not only are businesses and individuals joining forces to help a family in need of a safe, quality home, but it’s also an opportunity to build this community and take pride in being a citizen.  This is an important part of our Plan for Growth, which includes making sure that there is an adequate supply of safe and affordable housing across Saskatchewan.”

“A sod turning is an iconic representation of freedom, by giving a family the opportunity to break the cycle of poverty through home ownership,” Habitat for Humanity Regina - Yorkton Project Manager Merv Catchuk said.  “This home, the fourth Habitat for Humanity build in Yorkton, is a true reflection of support and dedication of the Yorkton community.  We are building community together, one family at a time.”

Located at 130 Tupper Street in Yorkton, the Habitat for Humanity home will be constructed in partnership with Mosaic Potash Corporation and is expected to be complete in November 2013.

In the 2013-14 Budget, the province committed an additional $2 million to help build 40 new Habitat for Humanity homes throughout Saskatchewan.  This represents the largest budget increase in funding to Habitat for Humanity in Canada, and brings the government’s commitment to Habitat for Humanity to a total of $7.1 million since March 2009.

Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization working toward a world where everyone has a safe and decent place to live.  The organization mobilizes volunteers and partners to build homes that provide families of low-income with access to affordable homeownership.  Each partner family selected by Habitat for Humanity will contribute a minimum of 500 hours of volunteer labour toward the building of their home and other Habitat homes.
