NEW PRIMARY HEALTH CARE CENTRE OPENS IN REGINA

Released on June 27, 2013

“Meadow” a Giant Step Forward for Improving Patients’ Access to Care

Residents in Regina’s inner-city neighbourhoods now will have improved access to quality everyday health care, thanks to a new, innovative primary health care centre that will offer after-hours care and link to other services available to clients.

Health Minister Dustin Duncan and Regina Qu’Appelle Health Region (RQHR) President and CEO Keith Dewar today opened the Meadow Primary Health Care Centre, located on Dewdney Avenue across from the Pasqua Hospital.

Led by RQHR and a group of family physicians, the centre’s team of health professionals will provide primary health care services to Regina’s inner-city neighbourhoods in addition to Regina Beach, Southey and Cupar.

“Today’s opening is a celebration of a new approach to primary health care,” Duncan said.  “Health care will be provided in a way that better meets the needs of patients, health providers and the surrounding community.  This aligns with our government’s goal of a health system that offers a superior patient experience and ensures better access to services for all Saskatchewan residents.”

The Meadow Primary Health Care Centre is one of eight primary health care innovation sites flowing from Saskatchewan’s Primary Health Care Framework announced in 2012.  An innovation site explores new ways to deliver team-based health care to improve access and patient experience.

RQHR worked closely with clients from the community to design the centre.  Their voice was very important as it shaped the design of the centre and helped determine the services the centre offers.

“The opening of the Meadow Primary Health Care Centre helps the Regina Qu’Appelle Health Region fulfill its goals of improving access to services for inner-city residents and select rural communities,”RQHR President and CEO Keith Dewar said.  “We expect the centre will not only allow for great collaboration between staff, health teams and primary health care providers, but also improve service performance and quality.  Most importantly, it will help us provide better care to our clients.”

A group of physicians purchased the building and $1.1 million in renovation costs were shared by physicians, the RQHR and the Ministry of Health.

Funding for the clinic comes from the $5.5 million provincial investment in 2012-13 for service stabilization and innovation site development.  In 2013-14, Saskatchewan provided an additional $4.25 million for the primary health care innovation sites.

The Meadow will officially open to the public on July 2.
