CREATIVE SASKATCHEWAN PROCLAIMED, FIRST BOARD MEMBERS ANNOUNCED

Released on June 27, 2013

A brand new product development and marketing agency will be officially proclaimed next week.  The Creative Saskatchewan Act will come into force July 2, and the first board members have been appointed.

Creative Saskatchewan was announced earlier this year.  Operating as an agent of the Crown, Creative Saskatchewan will assist in marketing the works of all creative industries including music and sound recording; film and television; interactive digital media; visual arts and craft; writing and book publishing and live performing arts.

“Creative Saskatchewan has been established at a time when our province is growing, our economy is strong, and the province is leading Canada in a number of economic areas,” Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Kevin Doherty said.  “There is enormous potential for our creative industries to make a national and international impact.  We are pleased to assist in raising Saskatchewan’s profile and showcasing our talent.”

The first six board members of Creative Saskatchewan have been appointed.  Mike MacNaughton from Regina is the chairperson.  The other board members include: Jocelyne Wasacase-Merasty, Meadow Lake; Cory Furman, Regina; Valerie Creighton, Stoughton; Rick Peddle, Saskatoon; and Jocelyne Kost, Saskatoon.

The Act also requires the appointment of five additional board of directors members from a list of nominees provided by the creative industries.  New members will be appointed as soon as possible.

One of the first tasks for the board chair will be to launch a national competition for a chief executive officer.  The CEO will report to the board of directors to set a long-term strategy for the agency and the growth of Saskatchewan’s creative industries.  The CEO will develop and oversee the funding programs from the $5 million investment fund, as well as export and market access, business capacity and skills development and research and development.
