NEW GROUP HOME FOR PEOPLE WITH INTELLECTUAL DISABILITIES OPENS IN SWIFT CURRENT

Released on June 25, 2013

Grand opening ceremonies are being held today for a new home for people with intellectual disabilities in Swift Current.

Crawford House is a three space group home, operated by Southwest Homes Inc. through a funding partnership with the Government of Saskatchewan.  The Ministry of Social Services provided $175,000 in capital funding for the project, and $330,000 in annual operating funding.

“We made a commitment in our Plan for Growth to make Saskatchewan the best place to live for people with disabilities,” Premier Brad Wall said.  “We’re demonstrating that commitment through our support for this project, and others like it across the province.”

Southwest Homes has provided services for persons with intellectual disabilities in the Swift Current area since 1974.  The organization now operates seven group homes, a supportive living program and a 13-space day program.

"Southwest Homes is very appreciative of the support we’ve received from the Government of Saskatchewan for the development of this program,” Southwest Homes Executive Director Susie Eidem said.  “This home is having a very positive impact on the lives of the people who live here and has helped to address the ongoing needs of people with disabilities in the Swift Current community.”

Since 2007, the government has invested almost $219 million to improve and expand programs and services for the disabled.

This includes $63 million for the Saskatchewan Assured Income for Disability Program, $62.5 million to address the waitlist of people with intellectual disabilities requiring specialized, residential, and/or day programs to meet their needs, and $23 million to help Community Based Organizations recruit and retain staff.
