PROVINCE LAUNCHES THE RANDELL MORRIS LEGACY SCHOLARSHIP

Released on June 20, 2013

The Government of Saskatchewan has committed $30,000 per year for five years to create the Randell Morris Legacy Scholarship.  The scholarship honours the late president of the Saskatchewan Indian Institute of Technologies (SIIT) and provides 15 scholarships per year of $2,000 each.

“I would like to congratulate the first-ever recipients of the Randell Morris Legacy Scholarship,” Premier Brad Wall said.  “Randell Morris was a visionary within the Saskatchewan post-secondary education system and this scholarship will serve as a lasting legacy to the many valuable contributions that he made to aboriginal education in our province.”

The first recipients of the scholarship were recognized today at the SIIT convocation ceremony in Saskatoon.

The scholarship is open to all full-time SIIT students from a single parent household who are of Aboriginal ancestry.  Applicants must provide a complete application including an essay about their career goals, financial need and how the scholarship money will impact the student and their family.

“This commitment from the Provincial Government on behalf of Randell Morris shows confidence in the outcomes and deliverables that SIIT produces,” Acting President of SIIT Ray Ahenakew said.  “We know that this scholarship program over the next five years will impact the learning opportunities for all the students and families involved indirectly or directly.”

Randell Morris joined SIIT in 1992 and became President and CEO in 2008.  He was instrumental in partnering with the Government of Saskatchewan in the expansion of SIIT's programs including the successful Construction Careers projects and the Aircraft Maintenance Engineering program.  He passed away in October 2012.

The application deadline for the Randell Morris Legacy Scholarship is April 30 of each year.  The application form can be found on the SIIT website at www.siit.sk.ca.
