Government Relations Minister and the Minister responsible for First Nations, Métis and Northern Affairs Jim Reiter encourages all Saskatchewan residents to participate in the National Aboriginal Day celebrations in their communities.
“As Saskatchewan welcomes more newcomers than ever before, we should all celebrate the first peoples of this land; those who helped make our province the success it is today and who will proudly help to shape an even stronger future,” Reiter said.
National Aboriginal Day was first proclaimed in 1996 by Governor General Roméo LeBlanc as a way to pay tribute to the diverse cultures and contributions of First Nations, Métis and Inuit people.
Celebrations are held across Canada and generally include round dances, jigging competitions and information and cultural displays. Celebrations are being held in numerous Saskatchewan communities including Saskatoon, Regina and Prince Albert.
