Released on June 20, 2013
A public inquest into the death of Christopher Hiebert has been scheduled for June 24 - 28, 2013, at 10 a.m. at the Saskatoon Inn. At the time of his death, Mr. Hiebert was 34 years old.
Section 20 of The Coroners Act, 1999, states that the Chief Coroner shall hold an inquest into the death of a person who dies while an inmate at a jail or correctional facility, unless the coroner is satisfied that the person’s death was entirely due to natural causes and was not preventable.
The purpose of an inquest is to provide a public hearing to examine the details surrounding a death. In addition to establishing the circumstances of a death, the coroner’s jury could make recommendations to prevent similar deaths in the future.
Coroner Robert Kennedy, Q.C., of Saskatoon will preside at the inquest.
