A family in Moose Jaw will soon have a home of their own, thanks to a partnership with Habitat for Humanity, Conexus Credit Union and $50,000 in funding assistance from the province through the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation. Construction of the home was officially launched today at a sod-turning ceremony.
“Our province is growing, our economy is thriving, and our government is committed to keeping that forward momentum through our Plan for Growth,” Moose Jaw Wakamow MLA Greg Lawrence said on behalf of Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation June Draude. “A very important part of that plan includes making sure that everyone – in every corner of the province – gets to share in our success story. That includes making sure that there is an adequate supply of safe and affordable housing across Saskatchewan. We are very pleased to work with Habitat for Humanity and Conexus to help another Saskatchewan family realize the dream of homeownership.”
“The vibrant community of Moose Jaw has shown remarkable support for Habitat for Humanity,” Habitat for Humanity Regina CEO Dennis Coutts said. “This support has provided three hard-working, low-income families in Moose Jaw the opportunity to break the cycle of poverty through homeownership. Today marks the beginning of the fourth build here in Moose Jaw and this could not have been possible without Conexus Credit Union, who donated $100,000 to fund the building of this home. We are proud to be community builders with you.”
The Habitat for Humanity home, located at 907 Ominica Street East in Moose Jaw, will be a single family bi-level home. The three-bedroom house will be approximately 720 square feet on one level. Construction is expected to be complete in December 2013.
Since 2009, the province has invested $6.5 million to help Habitat for Humanity build a total of 130 homes for low-to-moderate income families across the province in the communities of Moose Jaw, Regina, Prince Albert, Yorkton, Saskatoon, Humboldt, Lloydminster and Nipawin.
Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization working toward a world where everyone has a safe and decent place to live. The organization mobilizes volunteers and partners to build homes that provide families of low-income with access to affordable homeownership. Each partner family selected by Habitat for Humanity will contribute a minimum of 500 hours of volunteer labour toward the building of their home and other Habitat homes.
