GYMNASIUM CONVERSION GOES FORWARD AT SACRED HEART COMMUNITY SCHOOL

Released on June 14, 2013

Construction will soon be underway to convert the building next door to the Regina Catholic School Division’s Sacred Heart Community School into a full service gymnasium.

The expected cost of the project is $1.5 million with the Government of Saskatchewan committing up to $1 million and Regina Catholic Schools committing $500,000 to the project.  It is expected the gym conversion will be completed and in use this coming fall.

“I am pleased that the Regina Catholic School Division has successfully secured the property next door and can move forward with converting it to a full service gymnasium for the students of Sacred Heart Community School,” Education Minister Russ Marchuk said.  “This is an interim solution and we recognize there continues to be a need for a long term solution around school infrastructure for the community here.”

“A gymnasium is an integral part of the quality education program we provide,” Director of Education Rob Currie said.  “It is a place to build the school community, celebrate reading, and participate in physical education, and we are pleased to have worked with the ministry to secure an interim solution for the fall.”

The Government of Saskatchewan maintains funds for emergent capital projects to support school divisions in responding to emergency school facility issues.  School infrastructure spending has totalled approximately $600 million since November 2007 and also includes support for school divisions through the Preventative Maintenance and Renewal program as well as continued investment in major capital projects across the province.

As the Regina Catholic School Division is rapidly growing, maintaining its 29 schools is necessary to continue the Division’s 114 year history of offering a quality Catholic education to the City of Regina.
